When installing an S3 cylinder head, do I have to make any modifications to the bike?

The cylinder heads are perfectly suited to any carburation and map configuration.

As a general rule, you should not modify carburation, fuel or electronic map: just install and enjoy new sensations.

What is the difference between piston and cylinder letters: A, B, or C?
The cylinders, once produced, are verified and according to the final verified measurement, 
they are selected in "A", "B", "C" usually "A" is the smallest (nominal measurement)
"B" is 0.01mm larger and "C" is 0.02mm larger than "A". For this reason pistons of different sizes are also manufactured by "A", "B", "C"
to be able to assemble the piston with the most suitable clearance in each cylinder. So if the piston or cylinder is "B" we always recommend using piston "B",
modern cylinders with nicasil do not wear out if the use is in normal conditions,
but if the cylinder is very worn (this happens when dust enters the engine)
in this case we recommend making a new Nicasil coating to the cylinder, but if not:
you can mount a piston one size larger to "compensate" for cylinder wear.

Nicasil reparation, porosity on parts

During a nicasil repair, a new layer of nicasil is applied to the existing cylinder. This means the aluminum onto which the nicasil is deposited is not new, and the nicasil layer is applied based on the part provided by the customer.

During the preparation of the cylinder, the worn nicasil layer must be "diluted," which is done using acid at low temperature. The quality (especially the material) of the original casting can lead to different results. In the case of sand casting, the aluminum is less compact than in a steel shell casting.

In summary, if visible porosity is observed, it is not due to a lack of quality control, but rather the result of a repair carried out on a porous base.

You can install and use this cylinder with full confidence in the quality and adhesion of the nicasil; the water chamber's sealing has also been cold-tested.

How to check the measurement of the cylinder and piston ?

The adjustment tolerance between the cylinder and the piston is determined by measuring specific points on both components:
On the cylinder, the measurement is taken on the nominal diameter, 15 mm from the cylinder head, in the working direction.
On the piston, it is measured at the maximum diameter in the working direction, below the piston pin (gudgeon pin) axis, 18 mm from the bottom of the piston.
It is important to note that the measurement engraved on the piston corresponds to the value verified before applying the molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) surface treatment, also known as "black treatment".


Key points for verification

Reference temperature: all measurements must be taken at a stabilized temperature of 20 °C.

Piston verification:
It is carried out using a precision micrometer.
Once the MoS₂ treatment is applied, the surface layer alters the measurement; it is therefore no longer possible to measure directly with the micrometer.

Cylinder verification:
In this case, a high-precision Marposs device is used, or, in specific cases, a Subito-type dial gauge, previously calibrated according to the nominal diameter of the cylinder.
